#1. How long did it take to finish writing this book?
About 9 months, start to finish. The initial writing involves a lot of research as I go and that first draft is rough. I go through 4 to 5 self-edits with at least a couple weeks in between each one. Otherwise, I lose track of what I’ve written about when. Once I’m satisfied with the manuscript, it goes to content edit, then line edit

#2. What part of the writing process do you like the least?
Book production—the logistics of getting the book properly titled, priced, and uploaded.

#3. What drew you to take on this topic through non-fiction versus fiction?
The subject matter and purpose didn’t leave me much choice! Fiction can effectively drive home biblical themes, but when studying the Bible itself, you’re obligated to deal with the text. I’m helping people read God’s word and encouraging them to acknowledge it as true. Fiction would muddy the waters. There’s a place for it, but not in an informed devotional. As an author, I can give context. Offer insights. But the reader needs to know I am not making up things. I’m doing my best to discern what the Scripture means based on truths consistently woven through Scripture.

My father. He was a pastor who discovered many in his congregation either read the Bible through but had no idea what they’d read, or else gave up reading when they hit Leviticus. He wrote short daily devotionals to encourage them to keep reading. With his blessing, I expanded on this idea and created a series based on storytelling. Stories are the universal language God uses in the Bible to convey His character and reveal His purpose for our individual lives, the world, and His kingdom. My father wasn’t formally trained but he knew the Bible better than most seminary graduates. I sat under his teaching for years. He not only gave me a foundation for faith but also an approach to Scripture that that seasons my work yet today. He was a storyteller. From him I learned if I found the story behind a difficult passage, I could usually find the meaning.

There’s tension in the marriage. Disappointment with their career. They may feel stalled out. If they’ve had success, they’re realizing it’s empty. If they’ve failed, they hear the clock ticking and fear they don’t have the time, ability, or opportunity to fulfil their dreams. At whatever point people start asking, “Now what?” God will bring people and resources into their lives that will point to Him. My prayer is that The Bible Companion will be one of those resources.

Breakfast with Leviticus
My father was a pastor and a man with lofty ambitions. He was known for setting goals others deemed impossible then achieving them. However, there was one that got the best of him. He determined our family would read the Bible through from cover to cover—together. On January first of each year, a morning ritual of Bible and Breakfast began. On cold days, Dad would entice us to the table with his version of a Hot Toddy. We’d sip on hot grapefruit juice and eat while one of us read the day’s Scripture out loud. We read Genesis… Exodus… then came Leviticus. No one had the nerve to say the book was boring and we didn’t understand it, but perhaps Dad felt the same. At some point we gave up. The next year, we’d start anew. Genesis… Exodus… then Leviticus. The next year, same thing. We started the day with images of bloody sacrifices exploding in our heads more mornings than I could count. We never made it past Leviticus.
We teased my father about this epic fail, but he took away something from this experience--the realization that most of us need a little help with some parts of the Bible.
