Support Your Local Sheriff
Starring
James Garner ■ Joan Hackett ■ Walter Brennan
(1969)
Our trouble-shooting sheriff always put his finger on it (or in it).
No wonder they call him The Fastest Finger in the West.

McCullough is "passing through on my way to Australia" when he takes a job in a gold rush town. After a startling display of marksmanship he immediately arrests the youngest son of the evil landowner (Danby). A battle of hired guns begins as McCullough continues to tame the town and defeat the gunslingers with a combination of skill and wit.
If you like comedy and you want to watch a western, Support Your Local Sheriff would make a great choice. No matter how many times I watch this movie I can't help but laugh at the sheer craziness, from Prudy's antics in a mud fight to Jake's catching fish with dynamite. If you are looking for a serious western better skip this one, the one liners and sight gags are just too much.
I'm a fan of Walter Brennan's and have been since I watched Rio Bravo on VHS when I was a teenager. Usually he plays a good guy or even a goofy sidekick but in Support Your Local Sheriff you kinda love to hate him. He is so likeably despicable. Which brings me to another one of the villains, Bruce Dern. Usually I hate the guy, I mean he DID kill John Wayne in The Cowboys and that's pretty much unforgivable. But he is just so hilariously nasty in this film that Support Your Local Sheriff is my favorite of his movies. Fans of old movies will recognize several of the other characters including Harry Morgan from M*A*S*H and Disney films, to Jack Elam who could play evil villains and goofy sidekicks equally as well. Support Your Local Sheriff is the first movie, Support Your Local Gunfighter is the other, and in my opinion is by far the better of the two. Both movies do star James Garner but..... Some of the jokes and gags will fly over kids heads but this is one movie that you don't really need to turn off if the kiddies are present, in fact they'll probably find the movie just as funny or even more so than many adults. So, if you get the chance, stop and take the time to watch this rollicking good western and enjoy a good laugh out loud.

Quotes
Jason McCullough: Oh, it's an old trick. You did it pretty well - not real well - but pretty well. You feinted with your left shoulder, getting him to go for his gun, while you were goin' for yours with your right hand at the same time. It's an old Arizona trick; but I... I have seen it used as far north as Montana.
Jason McCullough: Well, you see, actually I was on my way to Australia when I heard about your gold strike and I decided to, uh, travel through here and see if I couldn't pick myself up a little stake. Thomas Devery: What do you want to go to Australia for? Jason McCullough: Well, it's the last of the frontier country. Thought I might like to do a little pioneering. Fred Johnson: I thought this was frontier country and we was pioneers. Henry Jackson: So did I. Jake: You want me to tell Joe Danby that he's under arrest for murder? What're you gonna do after he kills me? Jason McCullough: Then I'll arrest him for both murders. Pa Danby: If that gun had gone off, it'd of blowed right up in my face. Jason McCullough: Now it wouldn't have done my finger a hell of a lot of good either, would it? What can I do for you, Mr. Danby? Jason McCullough: [after Prudy shoots and kills 2 men] Ain't you ever heard of just wounding them? Prudy: I only know ONE way to shoot, and that's to kill. Jason McCullough: After we're married - no matter how many kids we got - when I say we're off to Australia... we pack up, kids and all, and off we go. Prudy: What do I wanna go to Australia for? Jason McCullough: Because that's where your husband would be. And girls usually go where their husbands are. |
