The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical drama film produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical The Sound of Music, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film's screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical's book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children. After bringing love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith.
If I were to make a list of movies that everyone should see The Sound Of Music would be somewhere near the top. There is something for everyone in this movie, music, romance, humor, and of course danger from Nazis as WWII approaches.
I've seen most of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals and The Sound Of Music is by far my favorite. Really, can you beat lyrics like "raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens....girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes, snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes". We know all of those songs, and many of can quote them at will, songs like Do Re Mi, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria, and of course everyone's favorite song My Favorite Things. I know that you can still see animated musicals but they just don't make musicals like this anymore. The golden age of musicals is gone but not forgotten thanks to VHS, DVD, and now video streaming. When you watch this film you might be inspired, as I was, to find out more about the real Trapp Family. Maria wrote two books, both of which I recommend, about the family and about herself. The Story Of The Trapp Family Singers and Maria give insight into this fascinating family and into the circumstances surrounding the play and the movie. You might also be interested to know that descendants of the family live in Montana and some of them have continued the family tradtion of song. My family periodically drags this movie out and we sit down together to enjoy this fun, a bit cheesy, wonderful musical. If you haven't introduced your own family to this classic musical you should definitely do so. And another generation will get the chance to sing... "So long, farewell, auf wiedersehn, goodnight."

Quotes
Maria: I can't seem to stop singing wherever I am. And what's worse, I can't seem to stop saying things - anything and everything I think and feel.
Mother Abbess: Some people would call that honesty. Maria: Oh, but it's terrible, Reverend Mother. Captain von Trapp: It's the dress. You'll have to put on another one before you meet the children. Maria: But I don't have another one. When we entered the abbey our worldly clothes were given to the poor. Captain von Trapp: What about this one? Maria: The poor didn't want this one. Maria: When the Lord closes a door, somewhere He opens a window. [Maria finds a frog in her pocket] Frau Schmidt: You're lucky. With Fraulein Helga, it was a snake! Captain von Trapp: Do you mean to tell me that my children have been roaming about Salzburg dressed up in nothing but some old drapes? Maria: Mmm-hmmm. And having a marvelous time! Captain von Trapp: You brought music back into the house. I had forgotten. Herr Zeller: Perhaps those who would warn you that the Anschluss is coming - and it is coming, Captain - perhaps they would get further with you by setting their words to music. Captain von Trapp: If the Nazis take over Austria, I have no doubt, Herr Zeller, that you will be the entire trumpet section. Herr Zeller: You flatter me, Captain. Captain von Trapp: Oh, how clumsy of me - I meant to accuse you. Maria: Gretl, what happened to your finger? Gretl: It got caught. Maria: Caught in what? Gretl: Friedrich's teeth. Max: The Von Trapp Family Singers. Here are your names: Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Brigitta, Kurt, Marta and Gretl. Gretl: Why am I always last? Max: Because you are the most important. |
